Child-centred disaster risk reduction
Across the world, childhoods are being degraded by disasters. The lives of an estimated 77 million children under 15 were severely disrupted by a disaster or armed conflict each year between 1991 and 2000. Over the same period 115,000 children under 15 were killed by armed conflict and disasters.
Millions of children who have survived disasters caused by natural and man-made hazards are left homeless, lose loved ones, suffer injuries, witness or experience violence, and suffer scarring psychological trauma.
Many more children would survive disasters if they had more information and skills related to disaster risk reduction and response. Initiatives that involve children not only benefit children themselves, but also benefit families and the wider community.
Plan is supporting community resilience to disasters through its work on Child-Centred DRR.
