Rwanda

Plan opened its office in Rwanda in the capital, Kigali in January 2007.

Rwanda has made significant progress in stabilising its economy following the end of the war and the 1994 genocide. It now has well functioning country management structures and a development strategy that is moving away from relief operations towards sustainable development programmes.

Together with the authorities of the district of Gatsibo in the eastern province, Plan is implementing several small scale projects on school health, furniture and supplies. We aim to diversify and increase our programmes over the coming years.

Plan will work with children, families, the government, interest groups, civil society organisations and other development partners to pursue future opportunities in helping the children of Rwanda.

Some of the reasons why Plan works in Rwanda:

  • poverty is pervasive and causes many children to drop out of school. 90% of the population earns a living from subsistence agriculture
  • children face great challenges as a result of historical circumstances such as the 1994 genocide, HIV and AIDS, ignorance and disease
  • many children die from treatable and preventable diseases
  • approximately 14.2% of all households are headed by children
